🌟 New Episode Alert! 🌟I recently had the privilege of hosting Dr. Stephani Mason on Beyond the Thesis with Papa PhD for a conversation titled "Promoting Faculty Diversity - the PhD Project".During our conversation, Dr. Mason shared her invaluable insights on the impact of PhD programs, on the current state of diversity in academia, and on the importance of preparing individuals for impactful careers both within and outside of academia after their degree. She also shares the mission and legacy of The PhD Project, the impact it had on her academic journey, and the way it is helping young scholars from underrepresented communities find their place in PhD programs. Here are three key takeaways from our engaging conversation:🔍 **Broadening Horizons Beyond Academia:**Dr. Mason discussed the critical need for researchers in non-academic roles, highlighting examples from the medical field and public policy institutions and showing how PhDs can solve complex real-world problems.🏫 **Diversity and Representation:**Emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives in decision-making, Dr. Mason brings attention to how representation in academia and various professions can close the gap between students' aspirations and career paths, enriching education for all.🌐 **Supportive Communities and Mentorship:**The PhD Project, celebrating its 30th anniversary, provides a supportive network for underrepresented individuals. Mentorship, coaching, and events help individuals navigate their academic journeys in the accounting and economics domain, promoting diversity both in academia and in corporate America. If you are exploring the possibility of a PhD or seeking to understand the broader implications of academic research, this episode is a must-listen. 🚀🎧Tune in to gain perspective, inspiration, and practical advice from Dr. Stephani Mason. 🔗The link is in the comments.#BeyondTheThesis #PhDProjects #DiversityInAcademia #CareerPaths #MentorshipMatters #AcademicJourney #RepresentationMatters

🌟 Thrilled to share the latest episode of Beyond the Thesis with Papa PhD 🎙️ This week, a treaasure from the vault: my Season 1 conversation with Joe Makkerh about dealing with challenges and obstacles in graduate school.🎧 During the interview, Joe talks about resilience, career transitions, and the ever-important question of work-life balance as a young researcher.🔑 Key Takeaways:_The Power of Asking for Help: Many graduate students struggle with seeking assistance for their academic work and beyond it. Realising that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness, is crucial and building a supportive network can make a significant difference._Transitioning from Academia to Industry: Moving from the world of academic research to the pharmaceutical industry offered Joe valuable lessons in resilience and in dealing with failure. Embracing these challenges head-on is key to personal and professional growth._Maintaining Work-Life Balance: The blurred lines between personal life and your graduate school work can take a toll on health and relationships. Prioritising self-care and setting boundaries is essential for long-term success and wellbeing.🔗 Don’t miss this episode! ❓“Why do our parents spend our first years teaching us to walk and to talk, and then, when we start school, teachers want us to sit and be quiet?” My youngest son’s friend asked me this question yesterday, as we were driving to a birthday activity. It was touching, because he was candidly asking me something that was clearly challenging for him to make sense of. And because he asked me so candidly, really expecting some satisfying insight from me.The disarming candor of a 9 year-old. 😊 After involving all the children in the car in the reflection, I gave him a serious, satisfying answer and let him participate in arriving at said answer. An almost philosophical conversation with a child trying to make sense of the very palpable changes in their life.As the birthday celebrations ended, his question stayed with me. 💭 It tapped into a larger common theme of growing up and needing to learn new rules to the game of life at each new chapter. As we level up through each of these chapters – school, university, graduate school and our different transitions in the job market – some of what we spent the last few years toiling for is shed to give place to whatever we need to learn next.Like the metamorphosis or the molting process many animals go through, it is a period of inner turmoil and vulnerability.Even of loss of identity.I know it was for me.The good news is that in our professional journey, we do not as much shed the learning we’ve accrued in the past, as relegate it to a role akin to muscle memory. 💪It is part of us forever. And it will inform and color whatever we do after. So next time you feel despondent at one such turning point, and maybe grieving for identity lost, think of it this way:🌟Within the space you're entering, those overt powers you’ve been working on so hard become hidden super-powers you can now leverage in surprising new ways.Leaving academia is NOT losing your identity. It is the opportunity to discover new ways to leverage what you’ve learned so far out in the world. The world needs you. So if you are in a period of transition, don’t let the panic get to you. Take some time to review and update the list of “hidden superpowers” you have accrued through time and:➡️ Reflect upon where you would enjoy putting them to use.and ➡️ Think about what new skill you would like to add to the list. My thesis started with this quote from R. Buckminster-Fuller: “There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly.”Taking your next step may be frightening right now, but trust that all previous “versions” of you are holding you up, making up a robust living bridge that will allow you to cross that canyon and start on your new journey. From one PhD to another. ⏩Future you will need great colleagues.♻️Repost to start the butterfly effect! 🐛🦋 (The photo is of me trying my hand at stand-up earlier this year, during a humor writing course)

Yes! See the job search/interviewing as a learning process.🧠There is only one guaranteed outcome for each and every interview - you will learn something new.💡And with each one you increase the probability of outcome #2 - the job offer. Thanks for sharing this great insight, Ali Divan, Ph.D.! 👍👍👍
