Steinbach, 72, of Doylestown, a retired funeral director, outdoorsman, and Civil War buff, died Wednesday when the Cherokee 6 plane he was piloting crashed in fog in Screven County, Georgia. The accident occurred while he was en route from his summer home in Florida to go hunting in South Carolina. For more than 20 years before he retired in 1995, he had been director of Reed Steinbach Funeral Home in Doylestown. Mr. Steinbach grew up in Nor-ristown.

After serving in the Marine Corps, including a stint in Cuba, he graduated from Eccles College of Mortuary Sciences in Philadelphia. In 1955 he went to work for Charles H. Reed Funeral Home in Doylestown and became a partner in 1971. When Charles Reed died in 1982, Mr. Steinbach's son, H.

Boyd, joined the business and is now owner of the funeral home. "He still helped out, but he didn't interfere," his son said. He said his father was too busy enjoying his retirement. An avid hunter, Mr. Steinbach traveled to trap-shooting and skeet-shooting competitions in his motor coach or by plane with his wife, Sara Ann "Sally" Baker Steinbach.

He had had a private pilot's license for 13 years and previously had flown gliders. As a student of the Civil War, he collected artifacts and memorabilia from the war and in the 1960s participated in battlefield reenactments in honor of the war's centennial. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 245 in Doylestown; the Doylestown Rotary Club; the Bucks County Fish and Game Association; the Friends of Gettysburg National Military Park; and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Doylestown. In addition to his son and his wife of 50 years, he is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Vaugh-an, and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Reed Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Road, Doylestown. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Doylestown Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Gettysburg National Military Park, Box 4622, Gettysburg, Pa. 17324. Alan M. Moskowitz Accountant, scholar, 78 Alan M.

Moskowitz, 78, of Bala Cynwyd, a certified public accountant and Jewish scholar, died Wednesday of a cerebral hemorrhage at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood. Mr. Moskowitz's granddaughter Ashley Lowe celebrated her bat mitzvah three days after her grandfather's death. His wife, Ann Schwartz Moskowitz, said her husband, who studied Jewish culture, had been looking forward to attending the ceremony. "Ashley dedicated the service to her grandfather," she said.

Mr. Moskowitz continued to be active in the accounting practice he had established in 1953. But, his wife said, "accounting was how he made a living; he was really a scholar." She said he owned thousands of books pertaining to Jewish history. He collected historical documents about Judaism as well as art and antiques. He was a member of the Jewish Genealogy Society and researched the history of crypto-Jews, who were forced to convert to Christianity during the Inquisition.

He was a member of the Society of Crypto-Jews and was a founding member of Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El in Wynnewood. For more than 50 years, he was treasurer of Har Jehuda Cemetery in Drexel Hill, which had been founded by his grandfather. Mr. Moskowitz grew up in West Philadelphia and graduated from West Philadelphia High School. After serving stateside in the Army during World War II, he earned a bachelor's degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

A member of Mensa, Mr. Moskowitz was a gifted chess player and often played blindfolded, his wife said. In addition to his wife of 52 years, he is survived by a son, Larry; daughters Beth Lowe and Bobbie Williams; and six grandchildren. A funeral service was held yesterday at Joseph Levine Son in Broomall. Burial was in Har Jehuda Cemetery.
